Andrew Walen is the founder of D.U.D.E. Mental Health in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. He is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, psychotherapist, author, speaker, educator, clinical trainer, and advocate with expertise in men's mental health issues. He is the immediate past-President of the National Association for Males with Eating Disorders (NAMED), and currently serves as National Eating Disorder Association's Senior Advisor on Males with Eating Disorders. Most recently, Andrew was the founder of The Body Image Therapy Center, and served as the Vice President for Eating Disorders Treatment for Refresh Mental Health. He returned to private practice in 2021 and opened D.U.D.E. to help males struggling with all manner of mental health concerns from mood and anxiety to grief and trauma.
He has appeared on The Today Show, The New York Times, USA Today, Men’s Health, and many other national and local media outlets as an expert in the field of men's mental health, eating disorders, and related issues. In addition, he has authored numerous articles and papers, and presented workshops at national and international conferences on the topic of eating disorders and underrepresentation of males in the mental health field. His book Man Up to Eating Disorders, which is a memoir and self-help book directed at males with eating disorders, was published May 2014. In the book, he talks about his own struggle as a high school athlete with anorexia, and later development of bulimia, muscle dysmorphia, and binge eating disorder at various stages of his life before seeking treatment.
Along with eating disorders and related concerns, Andrew has extensive experience helping males with anxiety, depression, OCD, substance use, trauma, grief and loss, major life changes, family, parenting, and relationship stress.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, Andrew also has an affinity for working with creative and artistic individuals who are struggling with mental health concerns.
Andrew is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work in Nashville. He also is a published singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who continues to write, record, and perform in the metro Baltimore and DC areas.
